Are You Planning A New Patio Design?

Alide Oortwijn

If you are adding an outdoor patio to your home design, maybe you are looking for ideas that will make it unique. If that's the case, here are some ideas that you can use as you establish your new patio:

If you want a unique feeling to your outdoor patio, think of starting with residential awnings. Besides adding a unique and attractive look to the patio, the awning will give you some protection during inclement weather. Think of going to a facility that sells different types of awnings so that you can see them in real life, making your buying decision an easier one. Or, go through home decorating magazines to get ideas for the awning you want.

Examples to consider include:

  • An aged metal awning would be a very unique choice.
  • Maybe you would rather have a traditional box-style awning.
  • For added interest, choose a brightly striped awning.
  • A window awning with a lily design would give the patio an elegant look.

As you select your awning, you'll need to decide whether you want a retractable style or one where the awning stays in place. Today's retractable awnings are super easy to manipulate. If you choose a glass awning, remember that you'll have protection from the rain, but the rays of the sun will still come through.

No matter the style of awning you select, you'll probably be amazed at how easy to is to install it. If you aren't comfortable doing the job yourself, of course the store where you purchased it will do the job for you.

Besides the awning, think of other ways you can make your patio unique and attractive. Start with your choice of furniture.

  • Outdoor wicker or rattan for a garden theme
  • Wrought iron for a Mexican feeling
  • Treated wood for a rustic design
  • Heavy plastic that looks like indoor furniture

As you select the furniture, remember to choose styles that complement the awning you selected. For example if you went with the aged metal style of awning, the wrought iron furniture might be your best choice. If you went with a French or New Orleans look by selecting striped awning, wrought iron furniture would be a good choice.

Buy things like outdoor fountains and decorative bird houses that will add some whimsy to your new patio. Think of having a light fixture that includes a fan to go over the seating area of your patio. If your patio design has any walls, half planters filled with real or faux flowers will add color to the area.
